Seriously?

My mass media law professor commented on my first mid-term, “Ever think about law school?”

Law school?

Well, I don’t know about that, but the more I thought about it, the less ridiculous it sounded. And yes, I have thought about it from time to time over the years, but never with any seriousness. It all just seemed so far away…

Law school -

I’m 44 years old. That would make me 47 or 48 by the time I passed the Bar.

Whoa! Wait a minute… I’m already passing the Bar! I haven’t even applied yet. And no, I’m not saying I will. Or did I?

It’s three more years of full-time, reading, writing and memory intensive school. I’m not a kid anymore.

Besides, what if they say “no.” They might.

The two closest law schools to my home are the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law - ranked number 97 in the nation by U.S. News and World Reports - and University of California at Davis School of Law - King Hall, coming in at number 34. Even higher on the list and still reasonably close (but too far to commute) are the University of California at Berkeley School of Law - Boalt Hall, ranked number eight, and the Stanford Law School, ranked second only to Harvard. Numbers 87 and 93, Santa Clara University and University of San Franciso respectively, are also within 100 miles.

McGeorge is closest, but it’s already late in the game for the fall semester. I haven’t yet taken the LSAT and can’t until June. Although it would appear the deck is stacked against me and I have significant doubt as to whether I am even capable of such a lofty goal, I have learned that these apparent roadblocks are merely challenges and, like all challenges, could be met and overcome. Or not, but I’ll never know until I try.

I will take the LSAT in June and do the necessary research and apply when appropriate. Although McGeorge is ranked in a three-way tie for the bottom of the top 100, there are literally thousands of law schools; McGeorge only accepts a little more than 30 percent of its applicants. As I said - there are significant obstacles - I’m not wearing rose-colored glasses - I understand the odds.

If I don’t try, I’ll never know.

Hmm... you might look cool in rose-colored glasses. You certainly wouldn't look out of place down here in SoCal. ;)

Wow. That's a hefty commitment. But I know lots of people who were glad to have tried new adventures... just because they tried. :) Which is what you were saying basically.

Definitely try - otherwise you'll always wonder. Besides, lawyers make a lot of money.

Whoa! Better you than me ;) I agree, though...you'll never know if you don't try it. I'm tickled for you...GO FOR IT!

Definitely take the LSAT! Even if you don't go to law school, it is good to know you could. My daughter has a good friend who went to McGeorge, otherwise I might never have heard of it. The law will help you no matter what profession you have, Mike. If you went to law school, you could conceivably have 20+ years to practice - or whatever. I say go for it!

Law school has trickled through my head many times over the years too, and still does sometimes. I wrote the LSAT's years ago, but it was at the urging of my father (he should've written it :).....and my heart wasn't into it at the time. What was the most interesting is that my husband (we were dating at the time) wrote it as well.....at the urging of his pops.....we ended up with the exact same mark. Two different exams, but exact same mark.

look forward to reading more about what you decide to do.....

You've hit the nail on the head there Mike! If you don't try you'll never know... and it can't really hurt to throw your hat in the ring can it? (Apart from the next lot of school fees of course which will really hit the hip pocket!)

I say go for it Mike! Who knows where it'll lead you!

Thanks for stopping by and for your support. You rock!

You might as well go for it. There's nothing to lose, but lots to gain. Just keep having a positive attitude about it, and you'll end up where you want to be.

Woohoo for further education!

Be very careful about this decision. I graduated from McG in the 80's. In the end I wish I had not gone into the law. Many, many people are seduced by the idea. The reality, on many levels, is different than what you might expect. I just got out of the law after 23 years and wish I had done it sooner. There is a reason that over 50% of law graduates are no longer practicint law within 5 years of graduation...
